[656] Which form (rūpa) is the earth element (pathavī-dhātu)?
That which is hard, the rough, hardness, the state of being hard, whether internal or external, whether clung-to (upādinna) or not clung-to (anupādinna) — this form is the earth element.
Which form is the water element (āpo-dhātu)?
That which is water, the watery, viscidity, the viscid, the cohesion of form, whether internal or external, whether clung-to or not clung-to — this form is the water element.
Which form is the fire element (tejo-dhātu)?
That which is fire, the fiery, heat, the heated, warmth, the warm, whether internal or external, whether clung-to or not clung-to — this form is the fire element.
Which form is the air element (vāyo-dhātu)?
That which is air, the airy, the distension of form, whether internal or external, whether clung-to or not clung-to — this form is the air element.
Which form is derived (upādā)?
The eye sense base (cakkhāyatana) … edible food (kabaḷiṅkāra āhāra) — this form is derived.
Thus is the classification of form (rūpasaṅgaha) in the fivefold manner.
