[657] The form base (rūpāyatana) is form (rūpa) cognizable by the eye; the sound base (saddāyatana) is form cognizable by the ear; the odour base (gandhāyatana) is form cognizable by the nose; the taste base (rasāyatana) is form cognizable by the tongue; the tangible base (phoṭṭhabbāyatana) is form cognizable by the body; all form is form cognizable by the mind. Thus is the compendium of form in the sixfold way.
