[659] The form base (rūpāyatana) is form (rūpa) cognizable by the eye. The sound base (saddāyatana) is form cognizable by the ear. The odour base (gandhāyatana) is form cognizable by the nose. The taste base (rasāyatana) is form cognizable by the tongue. An agreeable tangible object (phoṭṭhabba) of pleasant contact is form cognizable by the body. A disagreeable tangible object of painful contact is form cognizable by the body. The form base, the sound base, the odour base, the taste base, and the tangible base (phoṭṭhabbāyatana) are form cognizable by the mind element (manodhātu). All form is form cognizable by the mind-consciousness element (manoviññāṇadhātu).
Thus is the eightfold classification of form (rūpasaṅgaha).
