[694] Therein, which are the six unincluded roots (apariyāpanna-hetū)? The three wholesome (kusala) roots and the three indeterminate (abyākata) roots — these are the six unincluded roots.
Therein, which are the three wholesome roots? Non-greed (alobha), non-hatred (adosa), non-delusion (amoha).
Therein, what is non-greed? That which is non-greed, absence of greed, the state of being free from greed; non-lust, absence of lusting, the state of being free from lust; non-covetousness (anabhijjhā); non-greed, the wholesome root (kusala-mūla) — this is called non-greed.
Therein, what is non-hatred? That which is non-hatred, absence of hating, the state of being free from hate … non-ill will, non-malevolence; non-hatred, the wholesome root — this is called non-hatred.
Therein, what is non-delusion? Knowledge (ñāṇa) of suffering (dukkha), knowledge of the origin of suffering, knowledge of the cessation of suffering, knowledge of the way of practice leading to the cessation of suffering; knowledge of the past, knowledge of the future, knowledge of both the past and the future; knowledge of phenomena (dhammā) dependently arisen through specific conditionality (idappaccayatā); the wisdom (paññā) of such a kind that is — understanding, investigation, thorough investigation, investigation of dhammas (dhammavicaya), discernment, close discernment, detailed discernment, erudition, proficiency, subtlety, clarification, reflection, examination, breadth, sagacity, guidance, insight (vipassanā), clear comprehension (sampajañña), the goad; wisdom, the wisdom faculty (paññindriya), the power of wisdom, the sword of wisdom, the palace of wisdom, the light of wisdom, the radiance of wisdom, the lamp of wisdom, the jewel of wisdom; non-delusion, investigation of dhammas, right view (sammādiṭṭhi), the investigation-of-dhammas factor of awakening (dhammavicaya-sambojjhaṅga), a factor of the path (magga), included in the path — this is called non-delusion.
These are the three wholesome roots.
Therein, which are the three indeterminate roots? Non-greed, non-hatred, and non-delusion as the result (vipāka) of wholesome phenomena — these are the three indeterminate roots.
