[728] Therein, which is the fetter of stinginess (macchariya-saññojana)?
There are five kinds of stinginess (macchariya): stinginess regarding dwellings (āvāsa-macchariya), stinginess regarding families (kula-macchariya), stinginess regarding gain (lābha-macchariya), stinginess regarding praise (vaṇṇa-macchariya), stinginess regarding the Dhamma (dhamma-macchariya). That which is of such a sort — stinginess (macchera), the act of being stingy (maccharāyanā), the state of being stingy (maccharāyitatta), avarice (veviccha), miserliness (kadariya), tight-fistedness (kaṭukañcukatā), the mind's lack of open-handedness (aggahitattaṃ cittassa) — this is called the fetter of stinginess.
