[79] Which, on that occasion, are the eight faculties (indriya)? The faith faculty (saddhindriya), the energy faculty (vīriyindriya), the mindfulness faculty (satindriya), the concentration faculty (samādhindriya), the wisdom faculty (paññindriya), the mind faculty (manindriya), the joy faculty (somanassindriya), the life faculty (jīvitindriya). Which, on that occasion, is the faith faculty? That which on that occasion is faith (saddhā), trusting, conviction, deep confidence; faith, the faith faculty, the power of faith — this, on that occasion, is the faith faculty. Which, on that occasion, is the energy faculty? That which on that occasion is the mental arousing of energy (vīriya), exertion, striving, endeavour, effort, eagerness, endurance, vigour, steadfastness, unfaltering striving, not relinquishing zeal (chanda), not laying down the burden, firmly taking up the burden; energy, the energy faculty, the power of energy, right effort — this, on that occasion, is the energy faculty. Which, on that occasion, is the mindfulness faculty? That which on that occasion is mindfulness (sati), recollection, recall; mindfulness, remembrance, retention, the state of not drifting away, the state of not forgetting; mindfulness, the mindfulness faculty, the power of mindfulness, right mindfulness — this, on that occasion, is the mindfulness faculty. Which, on that occasion, is the concentration faculty? That which on that occasion is stability of mind (citta), steadiness, steadfastness, non-wandering, non-distraction, the state of a mind unwavering; serenity, the concentration faculty, the power of concentration, right concentration — this, on that occasion, is the concentration faculty. Which, on that occasion, is the wisdom faculty? That which on that occasion is wisdom (paññā), understanding, investigation, close investigation, investigation of dhammas (dhammavicaya), discernment, discrimination, differentiation, erudition, proficiency, subtlety, clarity, reflection, examination, breadth, sagacity, guidance, insight (vipassanā), clear comprehension (sampajañña), the goad; wisdom, the wisdom faculty, the power of wisdom, the sword of wisdom, the palace of wisdom, the light of wisdom, the radiance of wisdom, the lamp of wisdom, the jewel of wisdom, non-delusion, investigation of dhammas, right view — this, on that occasion, is the wisdom faculty. Which, on that occasion, is the mind faculty? That which on that occasion is mind, mentality (mano), mentation (mānasa), heart, the lucid (paṇḍara), mentality, the mind base (manāyatana), the mind faculty, consciousness (viññāṇa), the aggregate of consciousness (viññāṇakkhandha), the corresponding mind-consciousness element (manoviññāṇa-dhātu) — this, on that occasion, is the mind faculty. Which, on that occasion, is the joy faculty? That which on that occasion is mental ease, mental pleasure; the easeful, pleasant experience born of mind-contact; the easeful, pleasant feeling (vedanā) born of mind-contact — this, on that occasion, is the joy faculty. Which, on that occasion, is the life faculty? That which is, of those immaterial phenomena (dhammā), the life span, persistence, continuance, keeping going, going on, proceeding, maintenance; life, the life faculty — this, on that occasion, is the life faculty. These, on that occasion, are the eight faculties.
