[793] Therein, what is hatred (dosa)?
Resentment (āghāta) arises [at the thought], 'He has done me harm'; resentment arises [at the thought], 'He is doing me harm'; resentment arises [at the thought], 'He will do me harm'; resentment arises [at the thought], 'He has done harm to one who is dear and agreeable to me' … 'he is doing harm' … 'he will do harm'; resentment arises [at the thought], 'He has done good to one who is not dear and not agreeable to me' … 'he is doing good' … 'he will do good'; or else resentment arises groundlessly. That which is of such a kind — resentment of mind (citta), repugnance, repulsion (paṭigha), hostility, irritation, indignation, exasperation, hatred, animosity, malignity, malevolence of mind, mental animosity, anger (kodha), becoming angry, the state of being angry, hatred, hating, the state of being hateful, malevolence, becoming malevolent, the state of being malevolent, opposition, hostility, ferocity, abruptness, displeasure of mind — this is called hatred.
