[843] Which phenomena (dhammā) are designation (paññatti)?
That which, with regard to this or that phenomenon, is a reckoning (saṅkhā), an appellation (samaññā), a designation, a current usage (vohāra), a name (nāma), an act of naming (nāmakamma), an assigning of a name (nāmadheyya), a linguistic expression (nirutti), a phrasing (byañjana), an utterance (abhilāpa) — these phenomena are designation.
All phenomena without exception are pathways of designation (paññattipathā).
