Abhidhammapiṭaka · Dhammasaṅgaṇī · Vol. 34 · Section 842

[842] Which phenomena (dhammā) are language (nirutti)? Whatever is the reckoning (saṅkhā), appellation (samaññā), designation (paññatti), current term (vohāra), name, naming (nāmakamma), assignment of a name (nāmadheyya), language, phrasing (byañjana), or verbal expression (abhilāpa) of this or that phenomenon — these phenomena are language. All phenomena, indeed, are pathways of language (niruttipathā).
