[857] Therein, what is skill in the sense bases (āyatanakusalatā)?
The twelve sense bases (āyatana): the eye base (cakkhāyatana), the form base (rūpāyatana), the ear base (sotāyatana), the sound base (saddāyatana), the nose base (ghānāyatana), the odor base (gandhāyatana), the tongue base (jivhāyatana), the taste base (rasāyatana), the body base (kāyāyatana), the tangible base (phoṭṭhabbāyatana), the mind base (manāyatana), and the dhamma base (dhammāyatana). That which, with regard to those sense bases, is skill in the sense bases — the wisdom (paññā), the act of understanding, … non-delusion (amoha), investigation of dhammas (dhammavicaya), right view (sammādiṭṭhi) — this is called skill in the sense bases.
Therein, what is skill in dependent origination (paṭiccasamuppādakusalatā)?
"With ignorance (avijjā) as condition, volitional formations (saṅkhārā); with volitional formations as condition, consciousness (viññāṇa); with consciousness as condition, name-and-form (nāmarūpa); with name-and-form as condition, the six sense bases (saḷāyatana); with the six sense bases as condition, contact (phassa); with contact as condition, feeling (vedanā); with feeling as condition, craving (taṇhā); with craving as condition, clinging (upādāna); with clinging as condition, existence (bhava); with existence as condition, birth (jāti); with birth as condition, aging-and-death (jarāmaraṇa), sorrow, lamentation, pain, grief, and despair (sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsā) come to be. Thus is the origin (samudaya) of this whole mass of suffering (dukkha)." That which therein is wisdom, the act of understanding, … non-delusion, investigation of dhammas, right view — this is called skill in dependent origination.
