Abhidhammapiṭaka · Dhammasaṅgaṇī · Vol. 34 · Section 890

[890] Which phenomena (dhammā) have a limited object (parittārammaṇa)? All resultant (vipāka) [consciousness] of the sense sphere (kāmāvacara), the functional (kiriyā) mind element (manodhātu), and the rootless (ahetuka) functional mind-consciousness element (manoviññāṇadhātu) accompanied by joy (somanassa) — these phenomena have a limited object. Which phenomena have an exalted object (mahaggatārammaṇa)? The sphere of infinity of consciousness (viññāṇañcāyatana) and the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception (nevasaññānāsaññāyatana) — these phenomena have an exalted object. Which phenomena have a measureless object (appamāṇārammaṇa)? The four paths that are unincluded (apariyāpanna) and the four fruits of the monkhood (sāmaññaphala) — these phenomena have a measureless object. The four arisings of mind (cittuppāda) dissociated from knowledge (ñāṇa) among the sense-sphere wholesome (kusala), the four arisings of mind dissociated from knowledge among the functional, and all that is unwholesome (akusala) — these phenomena sometimes have a limited object; sometimes have an exalted object; they do not have a measureless object; and sometimes they are not to be described either as having a limited object or as having an exalted object. The four arisings of mind associated with knowledge among the sense-sphere wholesome, the four arisings of mind associated with knowledge among the functional, the form-sphere (rūpāvacara) fourth jhāna as wholesome and as functional, and the rootless functional mind-consciousness element accompanied by equanimity (upekkhā) — these phenomena sometimes have a limited object; sometimes have an exalted object; sometimes have a measureless object; and sometimes they are not to be described as having a limited object, as having an exalted object, or as having a measureless object. The form-sphere jhānas of the threefold and fourfold reckonings (tikacatukkajjhāna), as wholesome, as resultant, and as functional; the resultant of the fourth jhāna; the sphere of infinity of space (ākāsānañcāyatana); and the sphere of nothingness (ākiñcaññāyatana) — these phenomena are not to be described as having a limited object, as having an exalted object, or as having a measureless object. Form and Nibbāna are without object (anārammaṇa).
