[896] Which phenomena (dhammā) have a past object (atītārammaṇa)? The sphere of infinity of consciousness (viññāṇañcāyatana) and the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception (nevasaññānāsaññāyatana) — these phenomena have a past object. Phenomena that invariably (niyogā) have a future object (anāgatārammaṇa) — there are none. Which phenomena have a present object (paccuppannārammaṇa)? The two [sets of] fivefold consciousness (pañcaviññāṇa) and the three mind elements (manodhātu) — these phenomena have a present object. The ten arisings of consciousness (cittuppāda) that are the resultant (vipāka) of the sense-sphere (kāmāvacara) wholesome (kusala), the mind-consciousness element (manoviññāṇadhātu) accompanied by equanimity (upekkhā) that is the resultant of the unwholesome (akusala), and the rootless (ahetuka) functional (kiriyā) mind-consciousness element accompanied by joy (somanassa) — these phenomena may have a past object, may have a future object, may have a present object. The sense-sphere wholesome, the unwholesome, the nine arisings of consciousness that are functional, and the fourth jhāna of the form sphere (rūpāvacara), both as wholesome and as functional — these phenomena may have a past object, may have a future object, may have a present object, and may be such that they are not to be described as having a past object, nor as having a future object, nor as having a present object. The form-sphere jhānas in the threefold and fourfold [reckonings] (tikacatukkajjhāna), as wholesome, as resultant, and as functional; the resultant of the fourth jhāna; the sphere of infinity of space (ākāsānañcāyatana); the sphere of nothingness (ākiñcaññāyatana); the four paths (magga) that are unincluded (apariyāpanna); and the four fruits of the ascetic life (sāmaññaphala) — these phenomena are not to be described as having a past object, nor as having a future object, nor as having a present object. Form (rūpa) and Nibbāna are without an object (anārammaṇa).
