[900] Which phenomena (dhammā) are roots (hetū)? Three wholesome roots (kusalahetū), three unwholesome roots (akusalahetū), three indeterminate roots (abyākatahetū). Non-greed (alobha) as a wholesome root and non-hatred (adosa) as a wholesome root arise in the wholesome in the four planes (bhūmi); non-delusion (amoha) as a wholesome root arises in the wholesome in the four planes, excepting the four states of consciousness (cittuppāda) dissociated from knowledge (ñāṇavippayutta) among the sense-sphere (kāmāvacara) wholesome. Greed (lobha) arises in the eight states of consciousness accompanied by greed (lobhasahagata); hatred (dosa) arises in the two states of consciousness accompanied by grief (domanassasahagata); delusion (moha) arises in all the unwholesome. Non-greed as a resultant root (vipākahetu) and non-hatred as a resultant root arise in the resultants in the four planes, excepting the rootless (ahetuka) states of consciousness among the sense-sphere resultants; non-delusion as a resultant root arises in the resultants in the four planes, excepting the rootless states of consciousness among the sense-sphere resultants, excepting the four states of consciousness dissociated from knowledge. Non-greed as a functional root (kiriyahetu) and non-hatred as a functional root arise in the functionals in the three planes, excepting the rootless states of consciousness among the sense-sphere functionals; non-delusion as a functional root arises in the functionals in the three planes, excepting the rootless states of consciousness among the sense-sphere functionals, excepting the four states of consciousness dissociated from knowledge. These phenomena are roots.
Which phenomena are not roots (na hetū)? Excepting the roots: the wholesome in the four planes; the unwholesome; the resultant in the four planes; the functional indeterminate (kiriyābyākata) in the three planes; and form (rūpa) and Nibbāna. These phenomena are not roots.
