[689] Which phenomena (dhammā) are roots (hetū)? Three wholesome roots, three unwholesome roots, three indeterminate (abyākata) roots; nine sense-sphere (kāmāvacara) roots, six form-sphere (rūpāvacara) roots, six formless-sphere (arūpāvacara) roots, six roots not included [in the three spheres] (apariyāpanna).
