[690] Therein, which are the three wholesome causes (kusalahetū)?
Non-greed (alobha), non-hatred (adosa), non-delusion (amoha).
Therein, what is non-greed?
That which is non-greed, not being greedy, the state of not being greedy; non-infatuation (asārāga), not being infatuated, the state of not being infatuated; non-covetousness (anabhijjhā); non-greed, the wholesome root (kusalamūla) — this is called non-greed.
Therein, what is non-hatred?
That which is non-hatred, not hating, the state of not hating; loving-kindness (mettā), the act of loving-kindness, the state of loving-kindness; tender care (anuddā), the act of tender care, the state of tender care; seeking welfare (hitesitā), sympathy (anukampā); non-ill will (abyāpāda), non-affliction (abyāpajjha); non-hatred, the wholesome root — this is called non-hatred.
Therein, what is non-delusion?
Knowledge (ñāṇa) of suffering (dukkha), knowledge of the origin of suffering (dukkha-samudaya), knowledge of the cessation of suffering (dukkha-nirodha), knowledge of the way of practice leading to the cessation of suffering (dukkhanirodhagāminī paṭipadā); knowledge of the past (pubbanta), knowledge of the future (aparanta), knowledge of both the past and the future; knowledge of phenomena (dhammā) dependently arisen (paṭiccasamuppanna) through specific conditionality (idappaccayatā) — whatever wisdom (paññā) of such a kind there is: understanding, investigation, thorough investigation, investigation of dhammas (dhammavicaya), discernment, close discernment, specific discernment, erudition, proficiency, subtlety, lucidity, thinking, close examination, breadth of wisdom, sagacity, guidance, insight (vipassanā), clear comprehension (sampajañña), the goad; wisdom, the faculty of wisdom (paññindriya), the power of wisdom (paññābala), the sword of wisdom, the palace of wisdom, the light of wisdom, the radiance of wisdom, the lamp of wisdom, the jewel of wisdom; non-delusion, investigation of dhammas, right view (sammādiṭṭhi) — this is called non-delusion.
These are the three wholesome causes.
