[913] Which phenomena (dhammā) are taints (āsava)?
The four taints: the taint of sensuality (kāmāsava), the taint of existence (bhavāsava), the taint of views (diṭṭhāsava), and the taint of ignorance (avijjāsava).
The taint of sensuality arises in the eight arisings of mind (cittuppāda) accompanied by greed (lobha).
The taint of existence arises in the four arisings of mind dissociated from views (diṭṭhigata-vippayutta) and accompanied by greed.
The taint of views arises in the four arisings of mind associated with views (diṭṭhigata-sampayutta).
The taint of ignorance arises in all unwholesome (akusala) states.
These phenomena are taints.
Which phenomena are not taints?
Setting aside the taints, the remaining unwholesome (states); the wholesome (kusala) in the four planes (bhūmi); the resultant (vipāka) in the four planes; the functional indeterminate (kiriyā-abyākata) in the three planes; and form (rūpa) and Nibbāna —
