[956] Which phenomena (dhammā) are clingings (upādāna)? The four clingings: clinging to sensuality (kāmupādāna), clinging to views (diṭṭhupādāna), clinging to rules and observances (sīlabbatupādāna), and clinging to a doctrine of self (attavādupādāna). Clinging to sensuality arises in the eight arisings of mind (cittuppāda) accompanied by greed; clinging to views, clinging to rules and observances, and clinging to a doctrine of self arise in the four arisings of mind associated with views. These phenomena are clingings.
Which phenomena are not clingings? Except for the clingings, the remaining unwholesome; the wholesome in the four planes (bhūmi); the resultant in the four planes; the functional indeterminate in the three planes; and form and Nibbāna — these phenomena are not clingings.
