[919] Which phenomena (dhammā) are fetters (saññojana)? The ten fetters, namely: the fetter of sensual lust (kāmarāgasaññojana), the fetter of repulsion (paṭighasaññojana), the fetter of conceit (mānasaññojana), the fetter of view (diṭṭhisaññojana), the fetter of doubt (vicikicchāsaññojana), the fetter of adherence to rules and rituals (sīlabbataparāmāsasaññojana), the fetter of lust for existence (bhavarāgasaññojana), the fetter of envy (issāsaññojana), the fetter of avarice (macchariyasaññojana), the fetter of ignorance (avijjāsaññojana). The fetter of sensual lust arises in the eight arisings of mind (cittuppāda) accompanied by greed (lobha). The fetter of repulsion arises in the two arisings of mind accompanied by grief (domanassa). The fetter of conceit arises in the four arisings of mind dissociated from view and accompanied by greed. The fetter of view arises in the four arisings of mind associated with view. The fetter of doubt arises in the arisings of mind accompanied by doubt. The fetter of adherence to rules and rituals arises in the four arisings of mind associated with view. The fetter of lust for existence arises in the four arisings of mind dissociated from view and accompanied by greed. The fetter of envy and the fetter of avarice arise in the two arisings of mind accompanied by grief. The fetter of ignorance arises in all unwholesome (akusala) states. These phenomena are fetters. Which phenomena are not fetters? Setting aside the fetters, the remaining unwholesome states; the wholesome (kusala) in the four planes (bhūmi); resultant (vipāka) in the four planes; functional indeterminate (kiriyābyākata) in the three planes; and form (rūpa) and Nibbāna — these phenomena are not fetters.
