[168] Therein, what is right effort (sammāvāyāma)?
Here a bhikkhu, for the non-arising of evil, unwholesome phenomena (dhammā) that have not arisen, generates zeal (chanda), makes an effort, arouses energy (vīriya), exerts the mind (citta), and strives; for the abandoning of evil, unwholesome phenomena that have arisen …; for the arising of wholesome phenomena that have not arisen …; for the persistence, non-disappearance, increase, abundance, development, and fulfillment of wholesome phenomena that have arisen, he generates zeal, makes an effort, arouses energy, exerts the mind, and strives. This is called right effort.
