[575] Therein, what is right effort (sammāvāyāma)?
Here a bhikkhu generates zeal (chanda), endeavors, arouses energy (vīriya), exerts the mind (citta), and strives for the non-arising of evil, unwholesome phenomena (dhammā) that have not arisen; he generates zeal, endeavors, arouses energy, exerts the mind, and strives for the abandonment of evil, unwholesome phenomena that have arisen; he generates zeal, endeavors, arouses energy, exerts the mind, and strives for the arising of wholesome phenomena that have not arisen; he generates zeal, endeavors, arouses energy, exerts the mind, and strives for the persistence, non-disappearance, increase, abundance, development, and fulfillment of wholesome phenomena that have arisen. This is called right effort.
