[484] And how does a bhikkhu generate zeal (chanda), endeavor, arouse energy (vīriya), exert the mind (citta), and strive for the non-arising of evil, unwholesome phenomena (dhammā) that have not yet arisen?
Here, on the occasion when a bhikkhu develops supramundane (lokuttara) jhāna — leading out (niyyānika), conducing to dispersion (apacayagāmī) — for the abandoning of views (diṭṭhigata), for the attainment of the first stage (bhūmi): quite secluded from sensual pleasures … he enters upon and dwells in the first jhāna, of painful progress and sluggish direct knowledge (dukkhāpaṭipadā dandhābhiññā) — on that occasion he generates zeal, endeavors, arouses energy, exerts the mind, and strives for the non-arising of evil, unwholesome phenomena that have not yet arisen.
