[722] Therein, what is the first jhāna?
Here a bhikkhu, on the occasion when he develops supramundane (lokuttara) jhāna — emancipating (niyyānika), leading to dismantling (apacayagāmī) — for the abandonment of wrong views (diṭṭhigata), for the attainment of the first stage (bhūmi): quite secluded from sensual pleasures … he enters and dwells in the first jhāna, of painful practice and sluggish direct knowledge (dukkhāpaṭipadā dandhābhiññā) — on that occasion there is jhāna with five factors: applied thought (vitakka), sustained thought (vicāra), rapture (pīti), pleasure (sukha), one-pointedness of mind (cittassa ekaggatā). This is called the first jhāna. The remaining phenomena (dhammā) are associated with jhāna.
