[461] And how does a bhikkhu dwell contemplating the body in the body? Here, on the occasion when a bhikkhu develops supramundane jhāna (lokuttaraṃ jhānaṃ) — leading out, leading to the dismantling [of rebirth] — for the abandoning of wrong views (diṭṭhigata), for the attainment of the first stage (bhūmi), and, quite secluded from sensual pleasures, … enters upon and dwells in the first jhāna, of painful practice and sluggish direct knowledge — on that occasion there is contact (phassa), … there is non-distraction: these phenomena (dhammā) are wholesome. Because that same supramundane wholesome jhāna has been done, has been developed, quite secluded from sensual pleasures, … he enters upon and dwells in the first jhāna as [its] result (vipāka), of painful practice and sluggish direct knowledge, emptiness (suññata), contemplating the body in the body: whatever mindfulness, recollection, … right mindfulness, mindfulness as a factor of awakening (satisambojjhaṅga), a path factor, included in the path, there is on that occasion — this is called the establishment of mindfulness (satipaṭṭhāna); the remaining phenomena are associated with the establishment of mindfulness. And how does a bhikkhu dwell contemplating feelings in feelings (vedanā)? Here, on the occasion when a bhikkhu develops supramundane jhāna — leading out, leading to the dismantling [of rebirth] — for the abandoning of wrong views, for the attainment of the first stage, and, quite secluded from sensual pleasures, … enters upon and dwells in the first jhāna, of painful practice and sluggish direct knowledge — on that occasion there is contact, … there is non-distraction: these phenomena are wholesome.
