[726] Here, on the occasion when a bhikkhu develops supramundane jhāna (lokuttaraṃ jhānaṃ) — leading out (niyyānika), going to dispersion (apacayagāmī) — for the abandoning of views (diṭṭhigata), for the attainment of the first plane (paṭhamā bhūmi), and, quite secluded from sensual pleasures … enters and dwells in the first jhāna, which is of painful practice and sluggish direct knowledge (dukkhāpaṭipadaṃ dandhābhiññaṃ) — on that occasion there is five-factored jhāna (pañcaṅgika): thought-conception (vitakka), discursive thought (vicāra), rapture (pīti), pleasure (sukha), and one-pointedness of mind (cittassa ekaggatā). This is called the first jhāna. The remaining phenomena (dhammā) are associated with jhāna (jhānasampayuttā).
