[711] Therein, which is the first jhāna?
Here, at the time when a bhikkhu develops the path for rebirth in the form [sphere] (rūpūpapatti) and — quite secluded from sensual pleasures … — enters upon and dwells in the first jhāna [on] the earth kasiṇa (paṭhavīkasiṇa), at that time there is the five-factored jhāna: thought-conception (vitakka), discursive thought (vicāra), rapture (pīti), pleasure (sukha), and one-pointedness of mind (cittassa ekaggatā). This is called the first jhāna. The remaining phenomena (dhammā) are associated with the jhāna.
