[736] Therein, which is the first jhāna? Here a bhikkhu, on whatever occasion he develops form-sphere (rūpāvacara) jhāna that is functional (kiriya) — neither wholesome nor unwholesome and not a kamma-result (kammavipāka) — a pleasant abiding in the present life (diṭṭhadhammasukhavihāra): quite secluded from sensual pleasures … he enters and dwells in the first jhāna [on] the earth kasiṇa (paṭhavīkasiṇa) — on that occasion there is five-factored jhāna: thought-conception (vitakka), discursive thought (vicāra), rapture (pīti), pleasure (sukha), and one-pointedness of mind (cittassa ekaggatā). This is called the first jhāna. The remaining phenomena (dhammā) are associated with the jhāna (jhānasampayutta). Therein, which is the second jhāna? Here a bhikkhu, on whatever occasion he develops form-sphere jhāna that is functional — neither wholesome nor unwholesome and not a kamma-result — a pleasant abiding in the present life: with the stilling of thought-conception and discursive thought … the second jhāna … the third jhāna … the fourth jhāna … the first jhāna … he enters and dwells in the fifth jhāna [on] the earth kasiṇa — on that occasion there is two-factored jhāna: equanimity (upekkhā) and one-pointedness of mind. This is called the fifth jhāna. The remaining phenomena are associated with the jhāna. … Here a bhikkhu, on whatever occasion he develops formless-sphere (arūpāvacara) jhāna that is functional — neither wholesome nor unwholesome and not a kamma-result — a pleasant abiding in the present life: having completely transcended the sphere of nothingness (ākiñcaññāyatana), accompanied by the perception (saññā) of the sphere of neither-perception-nor-non-perception (nevasaññānāsaññāyatana), with the abandoning of pleasure … he enters and dwells in the fourth jhāna — on that occasion there is two-factored jhāna: equanimity and one-pointedness of mind. This is called the fourth jhāna. The remaining phenomena are associated with the jhāna. The Analysis according to Abhidhamma (Abhidhammabhājanīya).
