[723] Therein, what is the second jhāna?
Here, on whatever occasion a bhikkhu develops supramundane (lokuttara) jhāna — leading out (niyyānika), conducing to dispersal (apacayagāmī) — for the abandonment of views (diṭṭhigata), for the attainment of the first stage (bhūmi): with the stilling of thought-conception and discursive thought (vitakka-vicāra) … he enters upon and dwells in the second jhāna, of painful practice and sluggish direct knowledge (dukkhāpaṭipadaṃ dandhābhiññaṃ) — on that occasion there is the three-factored jhāna: rapture (pīti), happiness (sukha), one-pointedness of mind (cittassa ekaggatā). This is called the second jhāna. The remaining phenomena (dhammā) are associated with the jhāna.
