[724] Therein, what is the third jhāna?
Here, on whatever occasion a bhikkhu develops supramundane (lokuttara) jhāna — which leads out (niyyānika) and conduces to the dismantling (apacayagāmī) — for the abandoning of wrong views (diṭṭhigata), for the attainment of the first plane (bhūmi), and, with the fading away of rapture (pīti), … he enters upon and dwells in the third jhāna, painful in practice and sluggish in direct knowledge (dukkhāpaṭipadaṃ dandhābhiññaṃ): on that occasion the jhāna has two factors — happiness (sukha) and one-pointedness of mind (citta). This is called the third jhāna. The remaining phenomena (dhammā) are associated with the jhāna (jhānasampayuttā).
