[713] Therein, which is the third jhāna? Here a bhikkhu, on the occasion when he develops the path for rebirth in the form sphere (rūpūpapatti) and, with the fading away of rapture (pīti), … enters upon and dwells in the third jhāna, [on] the earth kasiṇa (paṭhavīkasiṇa) — on that occasion there is the two-factored (duvaṅgika) jhāna: pleasure (sukha) and one-pointedness of mind (cittassa ekaggatā). This is called the third jhāna. The remaining phenomena (dhammā) are associated with the jhāna.
