[712] Therein, what is the second jhāna (jhāna)?
Here a bhikkhu, on whatever occasion he develops the path (magga) for rebirth in the form realm (rūpūpapatti): with the stilling of thought-conception and discursive thought (vitakka-vicāra) … he attains and dwells in the second jhāna, [with] the earth kasiṇa (paṭhavīkasiṇa) — on that occasion there is the three-factored jhāna: rapture (pīti), pleasure (sukha), and one-pointedness of mind (cittassa ekaggatā). This is called the second jhāna. The remaining phenomena (dhammā) are associated with the jhāna.
