[501] Therein, what is right exertion (sammappadhāna)?
Here, on the occasion when a bhikkhu develops a supramundane jhāna (lokuttara jhāna) — leading out [of the round] (niyyānika), conducing to dispersal (apacayagāmī) — for the abandoning of wrong views (diṭṭhigata), for the attainment of the first stage (bhūmi): quite secluded from sensual pleasures … he enters upon and dwells in the first jhāna, of painful practice and slow direct knowledge (dukkhāpaṭipadā dandhābhiññā) — whatever mental (cetasika) arousing of energy (viriyārambha) there is on that occasion … right effort (sammāvāyāma), the energy factor of awakening (viriya-sambojjhaṅga), a factor of the path, included in the path — this is called right exertion. The remaining phenomena (dhammā) are associated with right exertion.
