[502] The four right exertions (sammappadhāna): Here a bhikkhu, for the non-arising of unarisen evil, unwholesome phenomena (dhammā), generates zeal (chanda), makes an effort, arouses energy (vīriya), exerts the mind (citta), and strives; for the abandoning of arisen evil, unwholesome phenomena, he generates zeal, makes an effort, arouses energy, exerts the mind, and strives; for the arising of unarisen wholesome phenomena, he generates zeal, makes an effort, arouses energy, exerts the mind, and strives; for the maintenance, non-disappearance, increase, abundance, development, and fulfillment of arisen wholesome phenomena, he generates zeal, makes an effort, arouses energy, exerts the mind, and strives. Of the four right exertions, how many are wholesome, how many unwholesome, how many indeterminate (abyākata)? … How many involve conflict (saraṇa), how many are without conflict (araṇa)?
