[465] The four right exertions (sammappadhāna): Here a bhikkhu, for the non-arising of evil, unwholesome phenomena (dhammā) that have not arisen, generates zeal (chanda), endeavours, arouses energy (vīriya), exerts the mind (citta), and strives; for the abandoning of evil, unwholesome phenomena that have arisen, he generates zeal, endeavours, arouses energy, exerts the mind, and strives; for the arising of wholesome phenomena that have not arisen, he generates zeal, endeavours, arouses energy, exerts the mind, and strives; for the persistence, non-loss, increase, abundance, development, and fulfillment of wholesome phenomena that have arisen, he generates zeal, endeavours, arouses energy, exerts the mind, and strives.
