[464] [The four establishments of mindfulness (satipaṭṭhāna)] are not roots (hetu); are accompanied by roots (sahetuka); are associated with roots (hetusampayutta); should not be said to be "both roots and accompanied by roots" — they are "accompanied by roots but not roots"; should not be said to be "both roots and associated with roots" — they are "associated with roots but not roots"; they are not roots but are accompanied by roots. They have conditions (sappaccaya); are conditioned (saṅkhata); are invisible (anidassana); are non-impinging (appaṭigha); are immaterial (arūpa); are supramundane (lokuttara); are cognizable by some [consciousness], are not cognizable by some [consciousness]. They are not taints (āsava); are not subject to taints (anāsava); are dissociated from taints; should not be said to be either "both taints and subject to taints" or "subject to taints but not taints"; should not be said to be either "both taints and associated with taints" or "associated with taints but not taints"; they are dissociated from taints and not subject to taints. They are not fetters (saññojana) … are not ties (gantha) … are not floods (ogha) … are not bonds (yoga) … are not hindrances (nīvaraṇa) … are not misapprehensions (parāmāsa) … They have an object (sārammaṇa); are not mind (citta); are mental factors (cetasika); are associated with mind; are conjoined with mind; are originated by mind; are co-existent with mind; are attendant upon mind; are conjoined with and originated by mind; are conjoined with, originated by, and co-existent with mind; are conjoined with, originated by, and attendant upon mind; are external (bāhira); are not derived (nupādā); are not clung-to (anupādinna). They are not clingings (nupādānā) … are not defilements (kilesa) … They are not to be abandoned by seeing (dassana); are not to be abandoned by development (bhāvanā); do not have roots to be abandoned by seeing; do not have roots to be abandoned by development; may be with thought (savitakka), may be without thought (avitakka); may be with examination (savicāra), may be without examination (avicāra); may be with rapture (sappītika), may be without rapture (appītika); may be accompanied by rapture (pīti), may be not accompanied by rapture; may be accompanied by pleasure (sukha), may be not accompanied by pleasure; may be accompanied by equanimity (upekkhā), may be not accompanied by equanimity; they are not of the sense sphere (kāmāvacara), not of the form sphere (rūpāvacara), not of the formless sphere (arūpāvacara); they are not included [in the three spheres] (apariyāpanna); may be leading out [of the round] (niyyānika), may be not leading out; may be fixed [in destiny] (niyata), may be not fixed; they are unsurpassed (anuttara); they are without conflict (araṇa).
