[765] [The four immeasurables (appamaññā)] are with conditions (sappaccayā); conditioned (saṅkhatā); invisible (anidassanā); non-impinging (appaṭighā); immaterial (arūpā); mundane (lokiyā); cognizable by some [consciousness], not cognizable by some. They are not taints (āsava); they are subject to taints (sāsavā); they are dissociated from taints (āsavavippayuttā). They should not be said to be "both taints and subject to taints"; they are "subject to taints and yet not taints." They should not be said either to be "both taints and associated with taints" or to be "associated with taints and yet not taints"; being dissociated from taints, they are subject to taints (āsavavippayutta-sāsavā). They are not fetters (saññojana) … They are not ties (gantha) … They are not floods (ogha) … They are not bonds (yoga) … They are not hindrances (nīvaraṇa) … They are not misapprehensions (parāmāsa) … They have an object (sārammaṇā); they are not mind (citta); they are mental factors (cetasikā); associated with mind (cittasampayuttā); conjoined with mind (cittasaṃsaṭṭhā); originated by mind (cittasamuṭṭhānā); co-existent with mind (cittasahabhuno); accompanying mind (cittānuparivattino); conjoined with and originated by mind (cittasaṃsaṭṭhasamuṭṭhānā); conjoined with, originated by, and co-existent with mind (cittasaṃsaṭṭhasamuṭṭhānasahabhuno); conjoined with, originated by, and accompanying mind (cittasaṃsaṭṭhasamuṭṭhānānuparivattino). They are external (bāhirā); not derived (n'upādā); they may be clung-to (upādinnā), they may be not clung-to (anupādinnā). They are not clingings (upādāna) … They are not defilements (kilesa) …
