[766] [The four boundless states (appamaññā)] are not to be abandoned by seeing (dassana); not to be abandoned by development (bhāvanā); not having roots to be abandoned by seeing; not having roots to be abandoned by development. Three boundless states may be with initial application (savitakka), may be without initial application (avitakka); equanimity is without initial application. Three boundless states may be with sustained application (savicāra), may be without sustained application (avicāra); equanimity is without sustained application. Three boundless states may be with rapture (sappītika), may be without rapture (appītika); equanimity is without rapture. Three boundless states may be accompanied by rapture (pītisahagata), may be not accompanied by rapture; equanimity is not accompanied by rapture. Three boundless states are accompanied by pleasure (sukhasahagata); equanimity is not accompanied by pleasure. Equanimity is accompanied by equanimity (upekkhāsahagata); three boundless states are not accompanied by equanimity. [They are] not of the sense sphere (kāmāvacara); of the form sphere (rūpāvacara); not of the formless sphere (arūpāvacara); included (pariyāpanna); not leading out (aniyyānika); not fixed (aniyata); surpassable (sa-uttara); without conflict (araṇa).
