[740] [The four jhānas are] not to be abandoned by seeing (dassana), not to be abandoned by mental development (bhāvanā); not having roots to be abandoned by seeing, not having roots to be abandoned by mental development. The first jhāna — setting aside the thought-conception (vitakka) arisen in it — is accompanied by thought-conception; three jhānas are without thought-conception. The first jhāna — setting aside the discursive thought (vicāra) arisen in it — is accompanied by discursive thought; three jhānas are without discursive thought. Two jhānas — setting aside the rapture (pīti) arisen in them — are with rapture; two jhānas are without rapture. Two jhānas — setting aside the rapture arisen in them — are accompanied by rapture; two jhānas are not accompanied by rapture. Three jhānas — setting aside the pleasure (sukha) arisen in them — are accompanied by pleasure; the fourth jhāna is not accompanied by pleasure. The fourth jhāna — setting aside the equanimity (upekkhā) arisen in it — is accompanied by equanimity; three jhānas are not accompanied by equanimity. They are not of the sense sphere (kāmāvacara); they may be of the form sphere (rūpāvacara), or may not be of the form sphere. Three jhānas are not of the formless sphere (arūpāvacara); the fourth jhāna may be of the formless sphere, or may not be of the formless sphere. They may be included (pariyāpanna), or may not be included; they may be leading out (niyyānika), or may not be leading out; they may be fixed (niyata), or may not be fixed; they may be surpassable (sa-uttara), or unsurpassable (anuttara). They are without conflict (araṇa).
