[504] [The four right exertions (sammappadhāna)] are not roots (na hetū); they are accompanied by roots (sahetukā); they are associated with roots (hetusampayuttā). They should not be said to be "both roots and accompanied by roots"; they are accompanied by roots but not roots. They should not be said to be "both roots and associated with roots"; they are associated with roots but not roots. They are not-roots that are accompanied by roots.
They are with conditions (sappaccayā); conditioned (saṅkhatā); invisible (anidassanā); non-impinging (appaṭighā); immaterial (arūpā); supramundane (lokuttarā); cognizable in one way (kenaci viññeyyā), not cognizable in another (kenaci na viññeyyā).
They are not taints (no āsavā); they are not subject to taints (anāsavā); they are dissociated from taints (āsavavippayuttā). They should not be said to be either "both taints and subject to taints" or "subject to taints but not taints"; they should not be said to be either "both taints and associated with taints" or "associated with taints but not taints"; they are dissociated from taints and not subject to taints.
They are not fetters (no saññojanā) … They are not ties (no ganthā) … They are not floods (no oghā) … They are not yokes (no yogā) … They are not hindrances (no nīvaraṇā) … They are not misapprehensions (no parāmāsā) … They have objects (sārammaṇā); they are not mind (no cittā); they are mental factors (cetasikā); associated with mind (cittasampayuttā); conjoined with mind (cittasaṃsaṭṭhā); originated by mind (cittasamuṭṭhānā); co-existent with mind (cittasahabhuno); conforming with mind (cittānuparivattino); conjoined with and originated by mind; conjoined with, originated by, and co-existent with mind; conjoined with, originated by, and conforming with mind; external (bāhirā); not derived (nupādā); not clung to (anupādinnā).
They are not clingings (nupādānā) … They are not defilements (no kilesā) … They are not to be abandoned by seeing (na dassanena pahātabbā); not to be abandoned by development (na bhāvanāya pahātabbā); not having roots to be abandoned by seeing; not having roots to be abandoned by development. They are sometimes with thought (savitakkā), sometimes without thought (avitakkā); sometimes with examination (savicārā), sometimes without examination (avicārā); sometimes with rapture (sappītikā), sometimes without rapture (appītikā); sometimes accompanied by rapture (pītisahagatā), sometimes not accompanied by rapture; sometimes accompanied by pleasure (sukhasahagatā), sometimes not accompanied by pleasure; sometimes accompanied by equanimity (upekkhāsahagatā), sometimes not accompanied by equanimity. They are not of the sense sphere (na kāmāvacarā); not of the form sphere (na rūpāvacarā); not of the formless sphere (na arūpāvacarā); not included (apariyāpannā); leading out (niyyānikā); fixed (niyatā); unsurpassed (anuttarā); without conflict (araṇā).
