[566] The awakening factor of investigation of dhammas (dhammavicaya-sambojjhaṅga) is a root (hetu); the six factors of awakening (bojjhaṅga) are not roots. [The seven] are accompanied by roots (sahetuka); [the seven] are associated with roots (hetusampayutta). The awakening factor of investigation of dhammas is both a root and accompanied by roots; the six factors of awakening should not be said to be "both roots and accompanied by roots"; they are accompanied by roots but are not roots. The awakening factor of investigation of dhammas is both a root and associated with roots; the six factors of awakening should not be said to be "both roots and associated with roots"; they are associated with roots but are not roots. The six factors of awakening are not roots but are accompanied by roots; the awakening factor of investigation of dhammas should not be said to be either "not a root but accompanied by roots" or "not a root and without roots (ahetuka)."
