[244] Four faculties (indriya) are roots (hetu); eighteen faculties are not roots. Seven faculties are accompanied by roots (sahetuka); nine faculties are not accompanied by roots (ahetuka); six faculties may be accompanied by roots, may be not accompanied by roots. Seven faculties are associated with roots (hetusampayutta); nine faculties are dissociated from roots (hetuvippayutta); six faculties may be associated with roots, may be dissociated from roots. Four faculties are both roots and accompanied by roots; nine faculties should not be said to be either "both roots and accompanied by roots" or "accompanied by roots but not roots"; three faculties should not be said to be "both roots and accompanied by roots" — they are accompanied by roots but not roots; six faculties should not be said to be "both roots and accompanied by roots" — they may be accompanied by roots but not roots, or may be such that they should not be said to be "accompanied by roots but not roots."
