[103] Eleven sense bases (āyatana) are not roots; the mental-object sense base (dhammāyatana) may be a root (hetu), may be not a root. Ten sense bases are without roots (ahetuka); two sense bases may be accompanied by roots (sahetuka), may be without roots. Ten sense bases are dissociated from roots (hetuvippayutta); two sense bases may be associated with roots (hetusampayutta), may be dissociated from roots. Ten sense bases cannot be said to be either "both roots and accompanied by roots" or "accompanied by roots but not roots"; the mind sense base (manāyatana) cannot be said to be "both a root and accompanied by roots"; it may be "accompanied by roots but not a root"; it may be such that it cannot be said to be "accompanied by roots but not a root"; the mental-object sense base may be "both a root and accompanied by roots"; it may be "accompanied by roots but not a root"; it may be such that it cannot be said to be either "both a root and accompanied by roots" or "accompanied by roots but not a root." Ten sense bases cannot be said to be either "both roots and associated with roots" or "associated with roots but not roots"; the mind sense base cannot be said to be "both a root and associated with roots"; it may be "associated with roots but not a root"; it may be such that it cannot be said to be "associated with roots but not a root"; the mental-object sense base may be "both a root and associated with roots"; it may be "associated with roots but not a root"; it may be such that it cannot be said to be either "both a root and associated with roots" or "associated with roots but not a root." Ten sense bases are not roots and are without roots; the mind sense base may be not a root but accompanied by roots, may be not a root and without roots; the mental-object sense base may be not a root but accompanied by roots; it may be not a root and without roots; it may be such that it cannot be said to be either "not a root but accompanied by roots" or "not a root and without roots."
