[86] Four aggregates (khandhā) are not roots (hetu); the aggregate of volitional formations (saṅkhārakkhandha) is sometimes a root, sometimes not a root. The aggregate of form (rūpakkhandha) is without root (ahetuka); four aggregates are sometimes with root (sahetuka), sometimes without root. The aggregate of form is dissociated from root (hetuvippayutta); four aggregates are sometimes associated with root (hetusampayutta), sometimes dissociated from root. The aggregate of form is not to be described (na vattabba) either as "both a root and with root" or as "with root but not a root"; three aggregates are not to be described as "both roots and with root"; they are sometimes "with root but not roots," sometimes not to be described as "with root but not roots"; the aggregate of volitional formations is sometimes "both a root and with root," sometimes "with root but not a root," sometimes not to be described either as "both a root and with root" or as "with root but not a root."
