[494] And how does a bhikkhu generate zeal (chanda), endeavor, arouse energy, exert the mind (citta), and strive for the maintenance, non-loss, further increase, abundance, development, and fulfillment of wholesome phenomena (dhammā) that have arisen? Here, on the occasion when a bhikkhu develops supramundane (lokuttara) jhāna — leading out (niyyānika), tending to the undoing of accumulation (apacayagāmī) — for the abandoning of wrong views (diṭṭhigata), for the attainment of the first stage (bhūmi): quite secluded from sensual pleasures, … he enters and dwells in the first jhāna, of painful practice and sluggish direct knowledge (dukkhāpaṭipadaṃ dandhābhiññaṃ) — on that occasion he generates zeal, endeavors, arouses energy, exerts the mind, and strives for the maintenance, non-loss, further increase, abundance, development, and fulfillment of wholesome phenomena that have arisen.
