[525] And how does a bhikkhu develop the basis for success (iddhipāda) endowed with concentration of mind (citta-samādhi) and the formation of effort (padhāna-saṅkhāra)?
Here a bhikkhu — on whatever occasion he develops supramundane (lokuttara) jhāna, which leads out [of the round] (niyyānika) and conduces to diminution (apacayagāmī), for the abandoning of wrong views (diṭṭhigata), for the attainment of the first stage (bhūmi): quite secluded from sensual pleasures … he enters upon and dwells in the first jhāna, which is of painful practice and sluggish direct knowledge (dukkhāpaṭipadā dandhābhiññā) — on that occasion he develops the basis for success endowed with concentration of mind and the formation of effort.
