[492] And how does a bhikkhu generate zeal (chanda), endeavor, arouse energy (viriya), exert the mind (citta), and strive for the arising of unarisen wholesome phenomena (dhammā)? Here, at the time when a bhikkhu develops supramundane (lokuttara) jhāna — leading out (niyyānika), conducive to dismantling (apacayagāmī) — for the abandoning of wrong views (diṭṭhigata), for the attainment of the first stage (bhūmi); when, quite secluded from sensual pleasures … he enters upon and dwells in the first jhāna, painful in practice and sluggish in direct knowledge (dukkhāpaṭipadaṃ dandhābhiññaṃ) — at that time he generates zeal, endeavors, arouses energy, exerts the mind, and strives for the arising of unarisen wholesome phenomena.
