[522] And how does a bhikkhu develop the basis for success (iddhipāda) endowed with concentration due to energy and the volitional formations of striving (vīriya-samādhi-padhāna-saṅkhāra)? Here a bhikkhu, at whatever time he develops supramundane (lokuttara) jhāna — leading out (niyyānika), tending to dismantling (apacayagāmī) — for the abandoning of wrong views (diṭṭhigata), for the attainment of the first stage (bhūmi): quite secluded from sensual pleasures … he enters upon and dwells in the first jhāna, which is of painful practice and sluggish direct knowledge (dukkhāpaṭipadā, dandhābhiññā) — at that time he develops the basis for success endowed with concentration due to energy and the volitional formations of striving.
