[519] And how does a bhikkhu develop the basis for success (iddhipāda) endowed with concentration (samādhi) due to zeal (chanda) and volitional formations of effort (padhāna-saṅkhāra)? Here a bhikkhu, on the occasion when he develops supramundane jhāna (lokuttara jhāna) — leading out [of the round] (niyyānika), going to dispersion (apacayagāmī) — for the abandoning of views (diṭṭhigata), for the attainment of the first stage (bhūmi), [and], quite secluded from sensual pleasures … he enters upon and dwells in the first jhāna, which is of painful practice and sluggish direct knowledge (dukkhāpaṭipadaṃ dandhābhiññaṃ) — on that occasion he develops the basis for success endowed with concentration due to zeal and volitional formations of effort.
