[18] Herein, which perception (saññā) is inferior, which superior?
Unwholesome (akusala) perception is inferior; wholesome (kusala) and indeterminate (abyākata) perception is superior. Wholesome and unwholesome perception is inferior; indeterminate perception is superior. Perception associated (sampayutta) with painful feeling (vedanā) is inferior; perception associated with pleasant feeling and with neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling is superior. Perception associated with pleasant and painful feelings is inferior; perception associated with neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling is superior. The perception of one who has not entered upon an attainment (asamāpanna) is inferior; the perception of one who has entered upon an attainment (samāpanna) is superior. Perception subject to taints (sāsava) is inferior; perception free from taints (anāsava) is superior. Or else, with reference to this or that perception in each case, perception should be seen as inferior or superior.
