[30] Therein, which consciousness (viññāṇa) is inferior, which superior?
Unwholesome consciousness is inferior; wholesome and indeterminate consciousnesses are superior. Wholesome and unwholesome consciousnesses are inferior; indeterminate consciousness is superior. Consciousness associated with painful feeling (vedanā) is inferior; consciousnesses associated with pleasant and with neither-painful-nor-pleasant feelings are superior. Consciousnesses associated with pleasant and painful feelings are inferior; consciousness associated with neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling is superior. The consciousness of one not in attainment is inferior; the consciousness of one in attainment is superior. Consciousness subject to taints (āsava) is inferior; consciousness free from taints is superior.
Or else, taking this or that consciousness in each case, consciousness should be seen as inferior or superior.
