[29] Therein, what is gross (oḷārika) and subtle (sukhuma) consciousness (viññāṇa)?
Unwholesome (akusala) consciousness is gross; wholesome (kusala) and indeterminate (abyākata) consciousnesses are subtle. Wholesome and unwholesome consciousnesses are gross; indeterminate consciousness is subtle. Consciousness associated (sampayutta) with painful feeling (vedanā) is gross; consciousnesses associated with pleasant and with neither-painful-nor-pleasant feelings are subtle. Consciousnesses associated with pleasant and painful feelings are gross; consciousness associated with neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling is subtle. The consciousness of one who has not entered a meditative attainment is gross; the consciousness of one who has entered a meditative attainment is subtle. Consciousness subject to taints (sāsava) is gross; consciousness free from taints (anāsava) is subtle.
Or else, consciousness should be understood as gross or subtle relatively, by comparing this or that consciousness one with another.
